SSpiro nomenclature A spiro compound is characterized by two or more rings that share a single carbon atom. Spiro Compounds have a prefix spiro which represent two rings with a spiro junction. Numbering in spiro starts from smaller ring but not on spiro junction carbon adjacent to spiro then towards the larger ring. In square brackets carbon numbers are added but in increasing order, first we add small ring carbon number then large ring carbon numbers leaving spiro junction carbon. spiro[4.5]decane not spiro[5.4]decane Substituent given lowest possible number as shown below.
